Why would gallstones cause pain if lining of gall bladder is not inflamed?

I have moderate discomfort, textbook for gallstone attack, and ultrasound reveals 2 gallstones in my gal bladder. However, the lining of the gall bladder is not currently inflamed. So, if it's not inflamed, how is it causing me pain? Can they still cause pain even when not inflamed?
